Preserve User's Responsibilities

The Preserve is private property. It is a privilege to use it. Contribute in some way to the continued improvement and maintenance of the property: contribute financially by joining the Friends of Los Jilgueros Preserve and the Fallbrook Land Conservancy; help on volunteer days; pick up trash when you’re walking. Do what you can to help us preserve the good reputation of dog walkers and bicycle riders.

Responsibilities of Dog Walkers

  • Your dog is YOUR responsibility. If you can’t control your dog, use a leash.

  • Do not let your dog approach a person or a leashed dog – even for a friendly sniff or greeting – without their permission. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR DOG AWAY FROM CHILDREN, THE ELDERLY, AND PERSONS WITH LIMITED MOBILITY.

  • If your dog is aggressive or difficult to control by voice command, use a leash or walk someplace else.

  • Leash your dog while on narrow, fenced, or otherwise constricted pathways, so it will not be allowed to approach anyone you may encounter there. Examples: The North Easement Path leading from the Firescape Garden to Peppertree Street, and the West Walkway/Boardwalk along Mission Road, next to the wetlands.

  • Know where your dog is at all times. It is not OK to walk ahead of your dog and let him/her wander after you . . . how would you know if they are leaving anything behind?

  • Pick up your dog’s poop. Period. Be a good neighbor. Pick up other poop if you see it – there may be a time when you are unable to find your dog’s poop.

  • It is your responsibility to protect wildlife and wetlands. Do not let your dog chase birds or wildlife. Do not let your dog dig – he/she could be digging up a nest! Do not let your dog venture into the wetlands. The wetlands are along the western edge of the preserve. Where the grass ends, the wetlands begin. Keep your dog away from the Native Plant areas.

Responsibilities of Bicycle Riders

  • Walkers have the right of way. ALWAYS.

  • Ride only at reasonable speeds. The Preserve is not a race course or training ground.

  • Be certain that you can control your bicycle at all times.

  • When approaching walkers from behind, slow down and call out to them that you are approaching on a bicycle, and indicate on which side you’ll be passing them ("Bicycle approaching – passing on your left")

  • Ride with concern for the safety of others. The safety of all walkers you approach is YOUR responsibility.

Friends of Los Jilgueros Preserve was formed to help promote responsible use of the preserve. We are a committee of the Fallbrook Land Conservancy.

Please remember – It’s a Preserve, Not a Park.
