A BRIEF HISTORY

The Fallbrook Land Conservancy (FLC), is a private, nonprofit, tax exempt organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the rural lifestyle and natural beauty of Fallbrook.

The Conservancy is governed by a volunteer board of directors.  Since forming in 1988, the FLC has grown to over a thousand members and has acquired more than 1850 acres of protected open space.  The open space includes five nature preserves and a landmark mountain, Margarita Peak.

In 1990, local donors gave the FLC  a historical house built in the 1890's with an acre of land.  The Palomares house and park, as it soon came to be known, serves as an office for the FLC and is used by the community for meetings and events.

The FLC branched out in 1992 with the addition of the Save Our Forest Committee.   This remarkable group of dedicated volunteers have been the recipient of many grants and awards, and have been responsible for planting over 3,000 trees in the community.

In 1996, FLC forged a productive public/private partnership by signing an agreement with the Fallbrook Public Utility District (FPUD) which allowed hikers and horseback riders to construct and use trails on the 1500 acres that FPUD owns along the Santa Margarita River.

The beauty and accessibility of the Santa Margarita Trails have spawned an energetic new group of FLC volunteers called the Trails Committee. Their goals are to assist in the preservation and maintenance of existing public trails, to design and develop new paths and trails, and to assist in forming and maintaining a system of public trails.

In 2000, FLC received the Fallbrook Chamber of Commerce's Community Builder award in recognition of its contributions to the improvement of the quality of life in the community.
